Lunar New Year in St Albans

Chines New Year Festival #1 – Alfreida street, St Albans
Sunday 5th January 2014

Every year for the past 16 years St Albans has come to life with the lunar new year festivities taking place in the closed off Alfreida street. This was the first year I attended the St Albans festival as previously we were always busy performing at either the Springvale, Richmond, Crown or Russell street events (see further down for the dates and locations of this year’s Lunar festivals). It was so great to see all the local traders and the community come together to enjoy the culture and celebrations as they welcome the new year – approximately 70, 000 people were expected to visit the St Albans festival this year.

Opening ceremony

In the opening ceremony we were told by the MC that this is the year of the green wood horse and in 2014 if you’re thinking of travelling or starting that business, now is the time to do it! We also told to watch out for an unexpected romance. 😉 The festival was opened by some special guests including Bill Shorton and some representatives from the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Vietnamese TV and John Watson from the Brimbank Council. There was loud applause when Bernie Finn promised that this was the year that will finally see the removal of the St Albans level railway crossing – let’s keep an eye out for that. Loud firecrackers and vibrant lion dancing brought the main stage to life and then we were off to check out the wonderful aromas that filled the street. Baby D received a red envelope from the beautiful women dressed in traditional attire, score!

The food

All the stalls had fresh food ready for the taking and I thought it was all quite reasonably prices compared to other festivals I’ve been to! All up we spent around $50 pigging out on:
bbq skewers, salt and pepper soft shell crab,
beef wrapped in betel leaves, shrimp pancakes,
Vietnamese iced coffee and sugar cane drink and some Vietnamese doughnuts.

It was such a nice way to spend a Sunday as the sun shone down on us. There were over a dozen rides and games that filled one half of the street creating such a cheerful atmosphere as you walked from one stage to the other. Singing and dancing by the local talents entertained the masses. Food, entertainment, family and great weather, what more could you ask for!

If you missed out last weekend, not to worry! – the St Albans Lunar festival was just the first of the Chinese New Year offerings this year in Melbourne. See the below table for the upcoming dates and locations or you can check out their official website here. Congratulations on such a well run event! See you at the next one!

Nasi lemak, interior decor, kaya toast, street view

Killiney Kopitiam, Shop 11, 108 Bourke st, Melbourne CBD

I was craving nasi lemak the other week so Daniel and I ventured across the road to Killiney Kopitiam. From the outside I didn’t even realise it was an eatery but the kaya toast on the menu caught my eye. For those of you who have been to Malaysia I’m sure you would have seen the Old Town White Coffee chain there – I LOVE the kaya toast they serve and got excited to see it on the menu here.

We went during peak lunchtime hour and to my delight there was enough room for Daniel’s pram and I to sit comfortably and the staff were very helpful sitting us near the kitchen and counter. You pay as you order so it’s good for those work lunches as you don’t have to worry about whether they split the bill and the crowd seemed to reflect this – groups of corporate folk  grabbing a quick meal on their lunch break.

When my meal was served I was pleasantly surprised to see a generous amount of ikan bilis on my plate –  normally when I order nasi lemak at other places they tend to skimp out on that and the sambal sauce. The meal was big, hearty size and even though I was full from it I still decided to order the kaya toast to try it. The kaya didn’t taste exactly like my favourite from Old Town White Coffee but I guess I’d have to go back to KL for that! All in all it was a tasty meal, great value and friendly service 🙂

Mini Priceline haul!

IMG_9725IMG_9722IMG_9726IMG_9728

Make up haul – 2 day 40% off Priceline sale!

2 weeks ago I couldn’t help myself and stopped by Priceline to grab some products that have been on my list for a while – with 40% off all cosmetics I had to restrain myself from buying even more than what I came in for!

Savvy nail enamel in Dark Cherry, Revlon ColorStay makeup in True Beige, Maybelline’s Color Sensational lip stick in 914 Vibrant Mandarin, Essence Long Lasting creme eye shadow in the color Raise the Curtain For… , Australis Paparazzi Perfect HD Blush in Screen Siren, Face of Australia HD eyebrow kit comes with 2 powders, wax, tweezers and a brush, Sally Hansen’s eyelash curler, Essence black eyeliner and smokey eye brush.

I saw on Instagram all the other Priceline hauls that were bought by other eager shoppers and although I didn’t go too crazy with the amount of items I bought I have thoroughly enjoyed using the ones listed above! Really affordable and great colors and pigmentation. Especially surprised at the Essence creme eye shadow as it lasts all day when you put it on! I use it with a darker matte shade from my Naked Basics palette and it works so well for everyday wear.

Hope you all had a great week and have an even better weekend!

Happy advanced Mother’s Day to all those who live in Australia 🙂
