Mama Mondays – One of my favorite times of the day

Simple Nighttime Routine

Ever since becoming a mum I have tried to find that balance between trying to keep the house clean, find good recipes to cook, actually cook them, play with the kids, work, exercise, blog, grocery shop, relax, the list goes on. And so far, the one routine that actually works is our nighttime routine.

This is one of my most favorite times of the day. The time where we’re all fed, clean and snuggled up in bed. Our 4-year-old leads us some daily prayers and then right at the end my husband and I will ask him “Daniel, what are you grateful for today?”. To which he has replied with the most random, inspiring and heartwarming thoughts. It’s so interesting hearing what he has to say and it has always helped us to end the day on a happy, positive note no matter what else has happened.

Just the other night:

Me: So Daniel, what are you grateful for today?
Daniel: Thanks to God for my family and thank you for our hearts.
Me: Our hearts??
Daniel: Yes because it pumps the blood around.
Me: Why does it pump the blood around?
Daniel: So the blood goes to all the part of our body.
Me: Did you know that there are red blood cells and white blood cells?
Daniel: Yeah, the white blood cells help my sugats get better! (sugat – Tagalog word for wound)

Sometimes it’s just so random, the things he says. And it’s a good conversation starter because we end up hearing more about how he perceives the world and the events that have happened during the day. In this case, he said he got it from his “body book” – a book for kids that I bought for him a while ago. We haven’t read it in so long so it was so random that he thought of it. Not sure if was exposed to anything at preschool or on tv but it kind of makes me want to learn more about or study early childhood learning because he really, truly absorbs everything around him.

What is your nighttime routine and what are you grateful for today?

Bump Diary #20 – 38 weeks

third trimester

How far along are you? 38 weeks and 5 days (I can’t believe it’ll be 39 weeks on Wednesday!!)

How big is baby? This week Baby is as long as a leek. On average around 49.8cms long and weighing just over 3kg still in a head-down position.

Body and changes:

Weight gain I haven’t weighed myself this week so nothing to report here except I’ve been eating heaps of Weetbix lately and I haven’t had it for ages. This week I had it for breakfast nearly every morning with half a banana sliced up, some blueberries, low fat milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

– Stretch marks Same as last week and still using both moisturizer and oil on my belly.

Sleep At the start of this 38th week I was officially feeling to heavy to fall asleep comfortably. Every time I tried to move in bed my tummy felt so heavy like I had eaten the whole China Bar buffet! The past couple of days have been a lot better.

Maternity clothes Bought some big comfy undies from Kmart this week amongst other things (they have so many amazing things there and I may have gone on a little shopping spree with mum buying homewares and stationery…damn #kmarthacks hashtag on Instagram has got me wanting to buy everything!)

The Other Stuff:
Nothing too different this week except just feeling a little more heavy like my belly is a lot lower ie. when I sit down I can’t sit with my knees touching each other! – they’re so far apart in order to make room for my low belly. It has been such a hot start to October that I am so glad I’m not pregnant during the middle of summer. Ahhh mama life! I’m going to miss all the movement inside once this little one decides to meet us – Baby was moving so much on Saturday night that I thought she was going to come out! But nope…we’re still playing the waiting game.

Sorry for the blurry pics! Uggh I though I just cleaned the mirror the other week…why is there still dust on it?!

Feeling exhausted but at the same time wanting to get out and about before Baby comes as I know I’ll be stuck in the house for a little bit post partum.

Needing to make some adjustments to our budget and book our next holiday already!

Wanting to meet and play with Baby.

Watching some funny stand up comedians and TED talks

Bookmarking outdoor area decor ideas now that our new pergola is up! Bring on summer!! 🙂

Noticing how grown up Mr D is putting on his own shoes and pants etc. He is constantly questioning everything!

Enjoying the backyard and picking fresh veggies and herbs to eat. Also enjoying these few weeks off work with Mr D before baby number two comes – mother and son bonding time. It’s been so nice but now I think he’s getting a little too attached as we couldn’t even leave him with grandma tonight to go on a date without him being upset.

Caught up with some of the girlfriends and their little bubbas this week and had an amazing smoothie from HealThy Self Co, Mr D went swimming heaps this week and loved it, the talented and hardworking guys from JPT Kitchens hard at work, can’t go past chocolates, strawberries ad churros!

Date night in Yarraville 🙂

gratefuldaniel #18
Daddy: What are you grateful for today Daniel?
Daniel: Thanks to God for my monster trucks and Monster Jam on October 10 (he knows the date of Monster Jam more than his own birthday!). Thanks for Mummy and Daddy and cousins, and Kumar (Wait, what!? How did the name of the pizza store owner make it into our gratitude journal this week? The hubby and I cracked up laughing so hard! I guess Mr D must’ve have been impressed with the pizzas or parma night last week haha!).

Have you been continuing to practice gratitude in the past week? What have you been grateful for?

The Urban Ma Problogger Gold Coast

A collection of photos from last year’s Problogger conference at the QT Hotel, Gold Coast.

It was our first time attending. The hubby and I bought tickets to it as soon as we found out Pat Flynn and Chris Ducker were presenting – we love listening to their podcasts! It was great to see that not only were their keynote speeches amazing, there were so many other talented and inspiring presenters that graced the stage over the 2 days.

We met some lovely people and learnt so many things that I was exhausted by the end of it. I can’t wait to see what new learnings and new connections we will take away from this year’s event! See you there 🙂

Bump Diary #7 – 26 week update

dr seuss on pregnancy

How far along are you? 26 weeks and 5 days
How big is baby? This week baby is as big as a red cabbage. On average around 35.6cms long and weighing 760 grams and is inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid. With the network of nerves in baby’s ears being better developed, I’d better watch my language and words as baby can now hear our conversations heheh!

Body and changes:

Weight gain Feeling big but being more active this week after having some pregnancy Pilates sessions with Michelle Pilates together with following along with my dvd of Lizbeth Garcia that a friend gave to me when I was pregnant with Mr D!

Stretch marks My skin around my middle has been so itchy this past week and I’m really trying not to scratch it lots. I’ve already had to go out and re-purchase my Bio Oil and Palmers Stretch Mark butter and have been using it to relieve the itchiness. Also I think I’m starting to see a faint linea nigra start to appear (that dark vertical line) on my belly. This line is caused by those pregnancy hormones that are also the cause of darkened areolas – oh how sexy pregnancy sounds right now…not!

Sleep Been sleeping quite well this week! I think the freezing, cold weather in Melbourne right now has us all enjoying our warm abodes!

Maternity clothes? I’ve had to cut the top but of some of my opaque stockings so it’s they’re not too tight lol! – a tip I got from one of my fellow dance crew girlfriends who is also currently pregnant, 10 weeks ahead of me. Works fine and I’ve got so many pairs that I thought I’d just do that rather than buy specific maternity stockings. I can just buy new ones next winter 🙂

The Other Stuff:
Since becoming pregnant I feel that my eyesight has become a little blurry when quickly looking up fro my book or mobile to check the train schedule details on those screens above the platform. I also notice blurriness when I quickly look up from my pc at work to try and focus on someone’s face in the distance – it takes my eyes a few long seconds to adjust. It was never like this before – my eyesight was really quite good. Apparently again, due to changes in hormones, metabolism, fluid retention, and blood circulation, eyesight is just one of our body functions that are affected during pregnancy.

Eating VitaGrain wholegrain crackers (sea salt and cracked pepper flavour) with slices of cheese on top.

Feeling pumped after pregnancy pilates sessions with my fellow pregnant dance buddies and our instructor Miche from Michelle Pilates.

Needing lots of cuddles with my little man. Because I can’t carry him anymore I feel like I need other ways to be close to him. So lots of cuddles sitting down and hugs are the best!

Wanting to just get rid of everything in the garage!! It’s feeling crowded with stuff and when we first built our home I said I’d never have a messy garage full of “stuff”…and now I do! It’s been so wet and cold lately that we haven’t been able to get anything done in that area of the house. Luckily hard rubbish collection is coming up – I’m taking it as a sign to make sure we get a move on and declutter like crazy!

Missing the warm sunshine

Watching hardly any Masterchef lately – been listening more to podcasts and reading pregnancy, fashion and home decor mags. Who got eliminated this week?!!

Bookmarking styling the bump pics on Instagram (Collab post coming up soon with tips on how to style the bump!)

Noticing people smoking all along the footpath right next to the buildings as I walk to work from the station 🙁

Enjoying all the catch ups I’ve been having over the past week – I caught up with some girlfriends at Din Tai Fung in Emporium (blog post coming soon), some workmates over dinner and dessert, and was out and about on the weekend with some mama friends to celebrate the launch of the latest online mag Wonderful Mama and some special birthdays. I also got to see my cousin work the stage at the Miss Philippine Fiesta presentation night as she is one of the candidates this year!

eekend wrap up – tried to take a selfie with our cute little guest who stayed over on Saturday night but D photobombed us! My other cousin in her gown for her presentation night and so lovely to meet Carla from Styling the Tribe.

More and more this week, D has just been surprising me with all the things he says. He’s no longer a little baby but a grown up toddler who is just chattering away so much! Tonight we got home from my aunty’s house where they have two dogs – one of them looks like Lassie! So pretty! Anyways we got home and Daniel saw Lando and he said “Lando looks sad…He needs two dogs so he’s happy” – He saw that my aunty’s two dogs were playing with each other and he wanted the same for our dog Lando lol!

#gratefuldaniel #7

Daddy: Daniel do you want to say thanks for anything today?
Daniel: No, I don’t want to say thank you for anything.
Daddy: Daniel…you have lots of things to be thankful for!
Daniel: No! Nothing! (see what I mean about him learning to say “no” lots now! Ugghh :/)
Daddy: Ok, well I want to say thank you for Daniel being a good boy, and thank you for mummy and baby and playing lots of cars with you.
Daniel: Oh! – thank you for my new race track and white car Daddy!

🙂

Bump Diary #5 – 24 week update

How far along are you? 24 weeks and 5 days
How big is baby? This week baby is as long as an ear of corn! On average around 30cms long and weighing 600 grams.
Body and changes:
– Weight gain Feeling even bigger than last week and hardly carrying Mr D now as he is getting too heavy. The other day I was on my feet, doing housework and was lifting Mr D a few times and by the evening I felt a bit sore down in my pelvis.
– Stretch marks Again, same as last week and still rubbing Bio Oil and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter all over my bump in the mornings and evenings. I haven’t noticed any new stretch marks.
Sleep Been getting onto the Quick-Eze this past week as the reflux and heartburn just seems to be burning my throat everytime I go to bed and it’s taking me so long to get to sleep. I need to stop eating such big servings and avoid eating to much chili, garlic and onion!
Maternity clothes?
I haven’t bought anything new but will probably do so in the next week – I just want to be as comfy as possible
The Other Stuff: Sorry in advance for TMI lol! – I never normally have the need to use deodorant but even when I was pregnant with Daniel I remember having to use it and lots of it! The hubby says he doesn’t notice anything and that I always smell nice but maybe he’s just being sweet…either way I’m loving the Dove Go Fresh Cucumber and Green Tea spray (I’ll post a June favourites this week!).

24 weeks pregnant bumpWinter fun The Urban Ma

Eating: I have managed to resist the urge to grab a Kit Kat this week haha! Been reaching for strawberries and pears 🙂
Feeling a little tired this week and my bump has been feeling heavy and hard.
Needing a trip to the hairdresser desperately! Need a trim and to get my ends coloured.
Wanting to fix up my blog and update everything but every time I seem to sit down to get productive online when Mr D goes to bed, the internet is never working! Hubby says it’s time to reformat my laptop.
Missing: Being able to try on clothes at the stores and fit into everything.
Watching Sweet Home Alabama and also finally made it to the movies for a date night with the family! Mr D sat through the whole Minions movie thoroughly enjoying the experience and the games afterwards! 🙂
Bookmarking: Bump photos on Instagram
Noticing: My thighs double in size :/
Enjoying Papa’s prawn, gnocchi and rocket dish – Sunday dinners at my parent’s house is the best! Also enjoying spending some time visiting fellow Rewind mama friends 🙂 Enjoyed baking these crunchy topped cinnamon muffins (below), love how freshly baked muffins and sweets fill the house with the smell of a warm bakery.

D has really been developing such longer sentences and every day he continues to say phrases that I’ve never heard him say before. Every morning though, I feel so bad leaving him as he certainly knows how set me on a guilt trip, “Mummy don’t leave me. Don’t leave me. Only daddy can go to work, you stay with me and Daddy will go to work by himself”. Wow! So thankful I get to watch the hubby and son play and enjoy lots of time together playing cars, but also outside on bike rides and watching the soccer games in the park nearby.

#gratefuldaniel #5

Daddy: Daniel do you want to say thanks for anything today?
Daniel: Thank you for watching Minions and uhhh thank you to lolo for cooking yummy dinner.

I can’t believe how fast a toddler can pick up new words, phrases and feelings.

Bump Diary #2 – 21 week update

21 week update – Baby #2

After getting a few questions about what I’m eating, how I’m feeling etc, etc, I thought I’d do a bump update with a little more detail for you! I remember when I was pregnant with D that I was really curious at 18 weeks as to how other mamas’ bumps looked and what they were going through, and it was that time I stumbled across Anna Saccone’s YouTube channel and since then, not only have I been watching her videos every now and then, even D loves watching Emilia and Eduardo as Anna and Jonathan’s family has grown! I always wondered why people might want to know all that information about pregnancy etc but it is such an amazing journey that is so unique for each and every one of us and our families that no wonder everyone is so interested!

So here is my bump #2 and I at 21 weeks 🙂

How far along are you? 21 weeks

How big is baby? Weighs approximately 360g and measure at around 27cm long from crown to heel

 Body and changes:
Weight gain I have no idea how much I weigh now and I kinda don’t want to know! -been eating wayyy too many servings of everything lately! In some books I’ve read, they say your weight gets checked at every appointment – I remember when I was pregnant with D, my OB never checked my weight at any of our appointments! I’ll try and have an update for you next time I have an appointment with my midwife.
Stretch marks Can’t really see any new ones right now. I did get a few on my waist on both the left and right side and a faint few below my belly button but they pretty much disappeared after a few months of giving birth. Like last time I’m using Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, Massage Cream for Stretch Marks in the mornings and Bio Oil in the evenings.
Sleep Been sleeping ok lately except for the odd trip to the loo in the middle of the night. D has also been sleeping in with us on weekends so that’s been amazing!
Maternity clothes? Yes this week after constantly being uncomfortable in my choice of work attire I finally stored away my corporate clothing and finally pulled out the stretchy stuff. I was trying to squeeze into my tailored skirts and trousers up until now and I just can’t do it anymore! My poor belly needs to be comfy. I need to be comfy. So I’m totally loving casual Fridays now because it means I get to wear my maternity jeans from TopShop. You’d never guess they were from the maternity section – they look so cool! And are so comfy.

21 week bump The Urban Ma blog21 week long weekend
Eating fruits (mainly mandarins, pears and freshly squeezed oranges), ice cream nearly every night – vanilla with that chocolate Ice Magic on top (the hubby is a big kid and loves that stuff!). Sometimes I mix the vanilla ice cream with the Coles Peanut Butter flavoured one. I really need to slow down on the ice cream though!
Feeling tired with a blocked nose – the whole household was sick all last week
Needing to use an extra pillow now to rest my leg over so I can sleep on my side, my left side that is
Wanting to be offered a seat on the train
Missing dance classes and rehearsals with Rewind!
Watching lots of Disney movies with my little man (well not lots, mainly Cars and Cars 2. Oh and Tangled!)
Bookmarking pregnancy photos like the ones below as I have some fellow mama friends that are also pregnant and since we’re not doing any dance photoshoots any time soon we thought a bump one would be fun 🙂
Noticing big cars…we have a Corolla and I love its size and everything about it but lately I’ve been looking at all those bigger cars on the road like the Jeeps and Range Rovers etc…hmmmm car shopping coming up maybe? Nah, I love that our car is so easy to drive and park. We’ll see how we go!
Enjoying every little single laugh, conversation, hug and kiss from D. He is just the bestest (is that even a word?) little boy ever! How am I going to manage dividing my attention and energy between 3 people in the family?…

21 week Pregnancy update The Urban Ma

Pinoy Fridays – My first time baking braso…nailed it!

Nailed It Braso The Urban Ma

Ok I didn’t really nail it! The photo above on the left is my first attempt ever at cooking the sweet classic Filipino dessert called Braso de Mercedes. The above pic on the right is of course courtesy of Pinterest. Even though I didn’t nail the presentation for it to be Instagram or Masterchef worthy, it tasted every bit delicious! (just a tad bit on the sweet side – gotta adjust that recipe!).

For those of you who aren’t too familiar with Filipino desserts, Braso is well-loved soft meringue with sweet yema custard filling rolled into a log-looking shape kinda like an arm (“braso” is Filipino for “arm”). This Filipino-style Swiss roll has soft, melt-in-your-mouth meringue that reveals custard goodness inside (some versions include chopped cashews). Divine!

I thought I’d make something for all the mums for lunch and dinner (I have a heap of aunties, grandparents etc which keeps our celebrations full of laughter and chit chat! – always so festive!). I baked it as part of our Mothers Day celebrations last month where I cooked this braso dessert, macaroons and kare kare (a Filipino savoury dish, kinda like satay but not really! I’ll post up pics when I make it again.).

Boy did I underestimate the amount of work that went into preparing all this! – or maybe I just need more practice so that I’m more efficient!

All the hard work was worth it though as my aunties, grandparents, parents and in-laws have done so much for us throughout the years – always there and always with a helping hand. Love them all so much.
